I am descended from Ruawaipu, Ngāti Porou, and Te Whānau a Apanui. My ancestors arrived in Aotearoa over a thousand years ago and served as careful guardians of the land for many generations.

They understood the sacred connection between people and the natural world, believing that our physical and spiritual wellbeing depends upon our relationship with the whenua. To honour and continue that legacy is a responsibility I carry deeply.

The practice
It is my belief that we are all here to walk each other home.

My own path towards self-love and acceptance was shaped by a moment when I realised the feelings, thoughts and beliefs I held about myself were the opposite of love.

Healing begins with love — for ourselves, for others, and for the world around us — and the wellbeing of people and the planet are deeply connected. That understanding shapes the artwork: the ink is taken from the plant, the plant from the whenua, and the work is an argument that they are not separate things.

Where the practice began

MONNI began in 2017 in Matakana Village — Australasia's first designated Slow Town — founded by Monni and her dear friend Aysha, with a vision of a space that felt calm, meaningful and deeply connected to wellbeing.

That vision grew past wellness into a label, and then into what matters most here: an ongoing body of original work, drawn and inked in Aotearoa.
