Monni Jansen makes work about the land it is made on. Botanical inks, drawn from what grows here — the ridge lines, the crossings, the maunga that hold the valley up.

Every work begins as a walk. Not a metaphor for one — an actual walk, before anything is drawn.

The ink is boiled from local plant matter, so the colour of a painting is decided by the season it was made in. Which is why the colours of the place are the colours of the work.
